Luckily, pinole (pih-nol)–a rediscovered ancient power food created by the Aztecs–will keep you energized far longer than a cup of joe. And, it’s as easy to prepare as a pot of coffee. Read on for our fool-proof instructions for making this delicious, nutritious breakfast that is sure to jumpstart your day!

You’ll also need 1 ½ cups milk, or milk substitute. Even if you usually use regular milk, try branching out for added flavors and health benefits. For instance, coconut milk is loaded with vitamins B and C, plus its smooth creaminess adds a rich texture and delicate tropical flavor. Other possible substitutions include almond, soy, and rice milk, so get creative and see which you like best!
After you’ve assembled your ingredients, whisk together the 1/2 cup of Purely Pinole and 1 ½ cups milk or milk substitute. Be sure to stir the mixture until all the powder has dissolved, or you could end up with a lumpy or unevenly-cooked breakfast.
Next, using a pot of your choice, pour in the pinole and place it on medium heat.
Let heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pinole begins to boil and thicken.
Finally, remove from heat. (For thicker pinole cook longer.)
Pour into a bowl, add your favorite toppings, and enjoy!
