prepare_1Eating healthy is most challenging in the morning, when sugary lattes and frosted scones tease our sleepy brains. Luckily, pinole (pih-nol)–a rediscovered ancient power food created by the Aztecs–will keep you energized far longer than a cup of joe. And, it’s as easy to prepare as a pot of coffee. Read on for our fool-proof instructions for making this delicious, nutritious breakfast that is sure to jumpstart your day!

Step 1
First, choose your favorite flavor of Purely Pinole. [Click here for delicious flavor choices!] Each one provides a unique, robust taste and one-stop, power-packed nutrition!

Chock full of vitamins and minerals, pinole is high in protein, fiber, and antioxidants. It also gives you a heart healthy dose of 100% whole grains powered by a very special, non-GMO variety of nutrient rich ancient maize.

According to the Whole Grain Council, research from Cornell shows that corn has the highest level of antioxidants of any grain or vegetable – almost twice the antioxidant activity of apples! Check out more here>

Step 2
You’ll also need 1 ½ cups milk, or milk substitute.  Even if you usually use regular milk, try branching out for added flavors and health benefits. For instance, coconut milk is loaded with vitamins B and C, plus its smooth creaminess adds a rich texture and delicate tropical flavor. Other possible substitutions include almond, soy, and rice milk, so get creative and see which you like best!

Step 3
After you’ve assembled your ingredients, whisk together the 1/2 cup of Purely Pinole and 1 ½ cups milk or milk substitute. Be sure to stir the mixture until all the powder has dissolved, or you could end up with a lumpy or unevenly-cooked breakfast.

Next, using a pot of your choice, pour in the pinole and place it on medium heat.

Step 5
Let heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pinole begins to boil and thicken.

Step 6
Finally, remove from heat. (For thicker pinole cook longer.)

Step 7
Pour into a bowl, add your favorite toppings, and enjoy!
